Blessed Urban V

Guillaume de Grimoard (1310–1370) was a French Benedictine abbot and scholar elected pope in 1362, while the popes lived in Avignon. He kept living as a monk, founded universities and in 1367 became the first pope in about 60 years to return to Rome. Political troubles drew him back to Avignon, where he died. He was beatified in 1870, the only Avignon pope to be beatified.

He paid for the education of more than a thousand poor students.
