The story

On the 5th of Iyar 1948 (May 14, 1948) David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the independence of the State of Israel. Yom HaAtzmaut celebrates that day. It is preceded by Yom HaZikaron, the day of remembrance for the soldiers who fell defending Israel and for the victims of terror.

The dates move a day earlier or later when they would fall near Shabbat.

How it is observed

On Yom HaZikaron sirens sound across Israel and everyone stands in silence. At nightfall the mood changes to celebration: torch-lighting ceremonies, fireworks, concerts and family barbecues. Communities around the world hold festivals, parades and prayers for the State of Israel.

Reading and psalm

Many communities say Hallel on Yom HaAtzmaut and the Prayer for the State of Israel.
