The beginning of each Hebrew month, at the new moon: a small monthly holiday.

The story

The Jewish calendar follows the moon: each month begins with the new moon. In ancient times the Sanhedrin declared the new month when witnesses saw the first sliver of the moon. When a month has 30 days, Rosh Chodesh is celebrated for two days.

Tradition gave Rosh Chodesh as a special holiday to women, because they did not take part in the sin of the golden calf.

How it is observed

A short version of Hallel is sung in the synagogue and a special Torah reading and Musaf prayer are added. On the Shabbat before, the coming month is announced with a blessing (Shabbat Mevarchim). Many women gather to celebrate, study or enjoy a meal together.

יְהִי רָצוֹן מִלְּפָנֶיךָ ה׳ אֱלֹהֵינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵינוּ, שֶׁתְּחַדֵּשׁ עָלֵינוּ אֶת הַחֹדֶשׁ הַזֶּה לְטוֹבָה וְלִבְרָכָה

Y'hi ratzon mil'fanecha, Adonai Eloheinu v'Elohei avoteinu, shet'chadesh aleinu et hachodesh hazeh l'tovah v'livrachah.

May it be Your will, Lord our God and God of our ancestors, to renew for us this month for goodness and for blessing.

Reading and psalm

Half Hallel (Psalms 113–118 with omissions) and Psalm 104, "Bless the Lord, O my soul", are said.
