Frequently asked questions
What is a Yahrzeit?
It is the anniversary of a loved one’s passing on the Hebrew calendar. It is observed every year, especially for parents, siblings, children and a spouse.
What is done on that day?
A candle that burns for 24 hours is lit, Kaddish is said in the synagogue, and many families give tzedakah or study in their memory.
Why is the candle lit the evening before?
The Jewish day begins at sundown. That is why the Yahrzeit candle is lit at sundown the evening before the date and left burning through the day.
What if they passed away at night?
If they passed away after sunset, the Hebrew date is the next day. Check "Passed away after sunset" and the calculator takes it into account.
Why does the date change every year?
The Hebrew calendar follows the moon and adds an extra month 7 times every 19 years. That is why the Hebrew date falls on a different civil date each year.
