Who was Saint Raymond Nonnatus?

Raymond was born around 1204 in Portell, in Catalonia, Spain. His mother died in childbirth and he was delivered after her death, which is why he was called non natus, not born. As a young man he joined the Order of Our Lady of Mercy, the Mercedarians, recently founded by Saint Peter Nolasco to ransom Christians held captive in North Africa.

According to the traditions of his order, Raymond was sent to Algiers with money to free prisoners. When the funds ran out, he gave himself as a hostage in exchange for captives in danger of losing their faith. In prison he comforted the captives and preached to his guards, and in punishment his lips were pierced and closed with a padlock. After being ransomed by his order he returned to Spain, where Pope Gregory IX is said to have named him a cardinal. Called to Rome, he fell ill and died at Cardona, near Barcelona, around 1240. Devotion to him was confirmed by the Church in the 17th century.

Feast day and traditions

Expectant mothers in Spain, Mexico and throughout Latin America pray to San Ramón Nonato for a safe delivery, often wearing his medal or keeping his image by the bed. His sanctuary near Cardona draws many pilgrims.

Because of the padlock on his lips, a popular custom asks his help against gossip and slander, and some offer him small padlocks.

Saint Raymond Nonnatus, protector of mothers and babies, watch over every woman awaiting a child, grant a safe and joyful birth, and guard our tongues from gossip. Amen.
