Who was Saint Odile of Alsace?

According to her medieval Life, Odile was born around 662, the daughter of Duke Adalric of Alsace, who rejected her because she was blind. She was raised in a convent, and when she was baptized by Bishop Erhard of Regensburg she received her sight. After being reconciled with her father she received his castle of Hohenburg, on a mountain in the Vosges, and turned it into a monastery, later also founding Niedermünster at its foot to care for pilgrims and the sick. She died around 720, and Pope Pius XII named her patron of Alsace in 1946.

Feast day and traditions

Mont Sainte-Odile remains a great pilgrimage site, and many visitors bathe their eyes at the spring that bears her name. She shares her feast day with Saint Lucy, another patron of the eyes.
