Who was Saint Charles de Foucauld?

Charles de Foucauld (1858–1916) was a French cavalry officer who lost his faith as a young man. After exploring Morocco he returned to the Church in 1886, became a Trappist monk, then a priest, and settled among the Tuareg people of the Algerian Sahara, where he wrote a Tuareg dictionary. He was killed at his hermitage in Tamanrasset on December 1, 1916, and canonized in 2022.
