Pope Saint Zosimus
Popular devotion December 26Pope

Pope Saint Zosimus

Greek pope of the early fifth century who confirmed the Church's teaching on grace against Pelagianism.

Saint Zosimus, from Artaud de Montor, The Lives and Times of the Popes, 1911 (public domain)

Who was Pope Saint Zosimus?

Zosimus, of Greek origin, served as pope from March 417 until his death on December 26, 418. At first he gave a hearing to Pelagius and his follower Caelestius, who taught that people can be saved by their own efforts without God's grace. After the bishops of Africa, including Saint Augustine, explained the danger, Zosimus issued a letter, the Epistola Tractoria, condemning Pelagianism and affirming that we need God's grace for every good act. His short pontificate was troubled, but he left the Church a clear teaching on grace.
