The story

Shabbat recalls that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, and that He freed the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. The Torah commands to "remember" and to "keep" the Sabbath day.

For thousands of years, in every land, Jewish families have welcomed Shabbat as a queen and a bride: a day without work, with festive meals, prayer, study and time together.

How it is observed

Shabbat begins on Friday evening, 18 minutes before sunset, when the women of the home (or anyone) light at least two candles. At the table the family blesses the children, makes Kiddush over wine and says the blessing over two challah breads.

On Saturday there are prayers in the synagogue, the weekly Torah portion is read, and families share long, unhurried meals. Shabbat ends Saturday night, when three stars appear, with the Havdalah ceremony using wine, spices and a braided candle.

Blessings and prayers

1 · Lighting the Shabbat candles

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Shabbat candle.

2 · Over the wine (Kiddush)

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה׳ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, borei p'ri hagafen.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

3 · Over the bread (Hamotzi)

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, hamotzi lechem min ha'aretz.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

Psalm 92, "A psalm, a song for the Sabbath day", is sung on Friday night and Saturday morning. Many communities also sing Lecha Dodi, "Come, my beloved, to greet the bride".
