Who Was Saint John Bosco?

John Bosco was born on August 16, 1815, in Becchi, near Turin, Italy, into a humble farming family. Ordained a priest in 1841, he opened his heart and his home to poor and abandoned boys in Turin, giving them shelter, schooling, a trade and faith. In 1859 he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, and later, with St. Mary Mazzarello, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, who continue his mission around the world.

The Preventive System

Don Bosco’s way of educating, known as the Preventive System, was based on reason, religion and loving kindness. Instead of punishment, he believed in being present, guiding young people with patience and showing them they were loved. He even learned juggling and magic tricks to win the attention of the boys, which is why he is also considered a patron of magicians.
