Who was Saint Vicenta María López y Vicuña?

Vicenta María was born in Cascante, Navarre, Spain, in 1847 and grew up partly in Madrid with an aunt who ran a home for domestic workers. She saw how many young women came from the countryside to work in houses and were exposed to loneliness, exploitation and danger. Turning down a marriage proposal, she founded in 1876 the Religious of Mary Immaculate, who offered these young workers a home, training and spiritual care. She died in Madrid on December 26, 1890, and was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1975.
