Who was Saint Cuthbert Mayne?

Cuthbert Mayne (c. 1544–1577) was born in Devon and became an Anglican minister and chaplain at Oxford, where friends such as Edmund Campion helped lead him to the Catholic faith. He went to the English College at Douai, in Flanders, and was ordained a priest in 1575. Back in England, he served secretly as chaplain in the household of Francis Tregian in Cornwall. Arrested in 1577 with a small Catholic devotional object, he was condemned for treason and executed at Launceston on November 29, 1577.

He was canonized in 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. He is especially honored in Cornwall and the Diocese of Plymouth, where his feast is kept on November 30.
