Saint Bibiana
Popular devotion December 2Virgin and martyr

Saint Bibiana

Young Roman martyr of the 4th century, invoked by people suffering headaches, and, legend says, hangovers.

Who was Saint Bibiana?

According to tradition, Bibiana was a young Christian in Rome whose parents and sister were also killed for their faith. Under Emperor Julian the Apostate, around 363, she was tied to a pillar and scourged to death. A church was built over her home on the Esquiline Hill and later rebuilt by Bernini.

Feast day and traditions

She is popularly invoked against headaches and, half jokingly, hangovers, a favorite "fun fact" in English saint lists, especially after the holiday season.
