Pope Saint Felix I

Third-century Roman pope who defended faith in the Trinity and the Incarnation.

Engraved papal portrait of Saint Felix I, 16th century (public domain)

Who was Pope Saint Felix I?

Felix was a Roman who served as pope from 269 to 274, during the reign of Emperor Aurelian. During his pontificate the Church dealt with the errors of Paul of Samosata, the deposed bishop of Antioch, and a letter on faith in the Holy Trinity and in Christ as true God and true man was long attributed to him. According to tradition, he encouraged the celebration of Mass over the tombs of the martyrs. He was buried in the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus on the Appian Way.
