Photograph, 1920s (public domain)

Who was Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro?

Miguel Pro (1891–1927) was a Jesuit ordained in Belgium who returned to Mexico during the government's persecution of the Church. Wearing disguises, he celebrated Mass in secret, heard confessions and brought food to the poor. Falsely accused in a bombing plot, he was shot by firing squad without trial on November 23, 1927, arms outstretched like a cross, crying "Long live Christ the King!" He was beatified in 1988.

Feast day and traditions

His feast is on the US calendar, close to Christ the King Sunday every year, and is dear to Mexican-American communities. The government photographed his execution to frighten Catholics, but the pictures made him a symbol of courage. Pope Clement I and Saint Columban are also remembered today.

Prayer

Blessed Miguel Pro, you gave your life for Christ the King. Give me joy and courage to live my faith. Viva Cristo Rey! Amen.
