The story

Sukkot begins five days after Yom Kippur, on the 15th of Tishrei. It remembers the forty years the people of Israel lived in temporary huts in the desert, protected by God, and it is also the harvest festival.

It is called "the season of our joy". In the days of the Temple, pilgrims came to Jerusalem from everywhere to celebrate.

How it is observed

Families build a sukkah, a hut with a roof of branches through which the stars can be seen, and eat their meals in it for seven days. Each day (except Shabbat) people take the four species: a palm branch (lulav), myrtle, willow and a citron (etrog), and wave them in all directions. The first two days (outside Israel) are full holidays; the middle days are Chol HaMoed.
