Frequently asked questions
What is a name day?
It is the day the Church celebrates the saint whose name you bear. In Spain, Latin America, Italy, Poland and many Catholic countries it is celebrated almost like a birthday.
How do I know which saint is mine?
Search for your name: we show you the saints who share it and their feast days. If there are several, many families choose the best-known one or one with special meaning for them, such as the saint of the day you were born.
What if my name does not appear?
Many names come from a saint with another form of the name: Joe comes from Joseph, Jack from John, Lupita from Guadalupe. Try the original form or search by your date of birth.
What is my birthday saint?
It is the saint the Church celebrates on the day you were born. It used to be the custom to name a baby after the saint of that day, and many families still do.
How do people celebrate a name day?
With a Mass or a prayer, a family meal, a greeting and sometimes a meaningful gift, such as a medal of their saint.
