On the front of this Saint Benedict medal, Saint Benedict is shown holding a cross and the Rule of his order. At his feet appear a chalice and a raven, symbols recalling the miracle in which Saint Benedict was protected from poison. Around the edge of the medal appears the Latin inscription “ejus in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur,” meaning “may we be fortified by his presence at the hour of our death.”
The reverse side of the 18K Solid Yellow Gold Saint Benedict Medal contains powerful prayers represented by initials for easy memorization. “CSSML” stands for crux sacra sit mihi lux (“the holy cross be my light”), and “NDSMD” represents non draco sit mihi dux (“let not the dragon be my guide”). Around the edge are additional initials representing the prayer vade retro satana, meaning “Begone, Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities.” At the top of the medal appears the word PAX, the Latin word for peace and a traditional Benedictine symbol.
Many people choose to have their Saint Benedict medal in 18K solid yellow gold blessed by a priest. A Benedictine priest can perform the traditional blessing associated with the medal, making this meaningful piece of faith jewelry even more special.
