December 12 is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most beloved celebrations in the Catholic world. For millions of people in Mexico, the United States and across the Americas, the Virgin of Guadalupe is much more than a religious image: she is a mother, a protector and a symbol of faith, identity and hope. In this article, we share her story, the meaning of the symbols in her image, and how to choose an 18K gold Virgin of Guadalupe medal to carry her close.
The Story of St. Juan Diego
In December 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an Indigenous man, on the hill of Tepeyac, near what is now Mexico City. Speaking to him in his native language, Nahuatl, she asked him to tell the bishop, Juan de Zumárraga, to build a church in her honor on that spot. The bishop asked for a sign. On December 12, the Virgin told Juan Diego to gather flowers at the top of the hill, where he found roses blooming in the middle of winter. He carried them in his tilma, a simple cloak, and when he opened it before the bishop, the roses fell to the floor and the image of the Virgin appeared imprinted on the fabric.
That tilma is still preserved today in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, one of the most visited Catholic shrines in the world. Juan Diego was canonized by St. John Paul II in 2002, becoming the first Indigenous saint of the Americas.
The Symbols in Her Image
Every detail of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe carries meaning:
- The rays of the sun behind her show that she brings the light of God.
- The moon under her feet and the stars on her mantle show that she is greater than the heavens, yet she points to God.
- Her hands joined in prayer show her humility and devotion.
- The black sash around her waist was a sign of pregnancy, showing that she carries Jesus.
- The angel beneath her carries her as Queen of Heaven.
Feast Day: December 12
Every December 12, millions of pilgrims travel to the Basilica in Mexico City, and communities around the world celebrate with Masses, processions, songs such as "Las Mañanitas" and flowers for the Virgin. She is honored as Patroness of the Americas, and her image appears everywhere in Mexican art, music and daily life, a symbol of faith and of cultural identity passed from one generation to the next.
